NM HS STATE TRACK AND FIELD

By Arnie Leshin
St. Michael’s swept the girls and boys state 3A track and field championships last year, can it repeat?
Could be. On the girl’s side, it has two of the finest athletes in the state in freshman Rayee Hunt, the state cross country champion who will be competing this time in perhaps five events that includes the relays. Jacqueline Gorman, too, will be competing in whatever suits her as the junior’s versatility comes off state titles in the 100 dash and the triple jump to go with a third place behind victorious Hunt in the 300 hurdles, a third in the pole vault, and also joined in via the stick passes as the Lady Horsemen won one and was second in two.
Hunt? Whatever it takes. Last year she claimed the longer hurdles, ran second in the 1600, third in the 800 and 3200, fifth in the triple jump, and ran some relay legs. Her sister, Logan, a junior who also plays on the soccer team that finished first and second at state the past two years, came in eight in the 800, and will be spending her time on the track and field roster alongside Raylee.
Sophomore Jada Lujan is back after taking third in the high jump last year. Another sophomore is sprinter Rebecah Begwell, and she sped to third place in the 400.
Santa Fe Prep also has one of the best athletes in the state in the 3A tennis singles champion Isabel Voinescu, a senior who came off the court, made her way to the state track and field, and finished first in the 100 dash and the long jump, second in the triple jump, and third in the 200. The Griffins also have sophomore Lauren McHorse, the reigning javelin winner. Sophomore Emery Kurth, daughter of Prep athletic director Todd Kurth, is in her second year in the sport and placed fourth last time in the triple jump.
