It was a rude opening inning Thursday for visiting Albuquerque Hope Christian at the Christian Brothers Athletic Complex as St. Michael’s tallied 11 times in the first inning of the 17-7 non-district baseball triumph and upped its overall record to 6-5.
It was 12-5 after three frames and the Horsemen added five more runs over the last two innings as the Huskies fell to 7-5. They pounded out a dozen hits and committed one error while holding Hope to six hits and taking advantage of the visitors four miscues. St. Michael’s plays a non-district game Saturday morning at Albuquerque Atrisco Heritage.
The Horsemen pitching has been fair, but the bats have been booming. They clouted three home runs that included a solo four-bagger by senior centerfielder Derek Martinez. As for the hurling, the duo of Derek Saiz and Rahul Williams combined to give up seven runs on six hits, six walks, a hit batter, and a wild pitch, all coming through 2 and two-third innings.
Said Martinez: “Offensively, our sticks are alive right now, but there’s not much to say about that, for we work hard and it pays off.”
In other games, Santa Fe Indian School advanced to 4-2 by winning 8-3 at West Las Vegas, which dropped to 2-4. The Braves scored once in the top of the second, four times in the third, once in the fifth, and twice in the seventh. They had 14 hits and no errors. The Dons began with a first inning run and tallied once each in the third and fourth innings.
At Los Alamos, Santa Fe High tumbled to 7-6 overall by being blanked 10-0 in the non-district contest that upped the Hilltoppers mark to 6-5 as they held the Demons to four hits and the visitors didn’t help their selves with five miscues. Los Alamos had all the runs it would need by scoring twice in the first frame and tallying eight runs over the last two innings. It came up with seven hits and committed three errors. Santa Fe High again takes to the road and plays a doubleheader Saturday at Albuquerque Cibola, with the games scheduled for 10 a.m. and noon.
At Capital, the Jaguars are now 5-7 overall after being dominated 20-6 by visiting Aztec in non-district play. Aztec, now 9-5, led only 8-6 before driving home a dozen runs in the top of the sixth to force the run-rule. Capital picked up three runs apiece in the third and fourth innings. The Jags are home to
