Capital and Santa Fe Indian School came away with district doubleheader softball wins

By Arnie Leshin
Capital softball picked up a pair of run-rule wins in the circle from junior Athena Grimley in sweeping a 11-0, 11-1 doubleheader at Albuquerque Rio Grande in District 5-5A play Saturday. It advanced the Jaguars to 7-5 overall and 2-0 in district, with the Ravens now at 6-9overall, 0-2 in district, and losers of three in a row.
Santa Fe Indian School also won twice, 3-2, 9-1 in a visit to District 2-3A St. Michael’s Saturday, and this came on quality pitching both times from junior Shade Phae Young, as the Braves upped their overall mark to 10-6 and to 4-0 in district, while the Lady Horsemen dropped to 7-6 overall and 0-3 in district.
Elsewhere, Santa Fe High continued its downhill run by traveling to District 5-5A rival Albuquerque High Saturday and returning with 11-1 and 12-2 setbacks to fall to 2-14 overall and 0-2 in district, and with the Bulldogs now 6-8 overall and 2-0 in district.
In Capital’s contest, it was a matter of Jaguar hits and runs mixed in with Grimley’s hurling and hitting. She won both times in the circle, with sophomore Layla Toya clouting home runs in both mercy-rule games that were called after five frames. In the opener, it was a grand slam home run by her that ended the contest. In game two, Capital tallied seven runs in the third inning and Toya knocked in three of her grand total of seven RBI.
As for Grimley, she gave up only a solo home run in the second inning of the second game and went 2-for-3 in each contest. From the circle, she came away with 11 strikeouts, with six in the opener.
For Indian School, Young fanned 21 batters in the twin bill, 13 in game one, and allowed the two Lady Horsemen
runs in the first frame of that contest that the Braves won via a single from Hannah Martinez. Young, meanwhile, came up with two safeties and drove home three runs. They next play visiting district foe Robertson on Tuesday with first place on the line. The same day, St. Michael’s heads up to Raton for a district game.
Santa Fe High gave up a dozen hits in the opener that Albuquerque High scored in all five innings of the run-rule contest, and the Demonettes tallied their lone run in the first inning. In game two, the Bulldogs needed all the runs they would need by coming up with three in the opening frame and then piling on nine runs in the fifth inning, with Santa Fe High tallying a pair of third inning runs. The Demonettes have now rung up 65 runs and yielded 218 in this seventh-straight defeat.
