St. Michael’s and Capital drop district softball doubleheaders

By Arnie Leshin
After dropping a doubleheader to visiting Robertson Saturday, St. Michael’s softball team lost for the seventh straight time and looked forward to ending it with a non-district game Wednesday at hapless Santa Fe High.
Except that that contest was cancelled by the Demonettes (2-15) after learning they had played four times in three days and were over the limit, so the Lady Horsemen (7-9) replaced them with another non-district game at Pecos the same day.
“We had a bad day in the field against Robertson,” said St. Michael’s head coach Joe Alvarez, “and are looking to win the game at Pecos.”
The first-place Cardinals in District 2-3A advanced to 14-3 overall and 5-0 in district play. For the Lady Horsemen, it put their district mark at 0-6 after getting away to a good start.
At Capital, the Jaguars were swept by Albuquerque High, 9-5 and 16-1, in District 5-5A play Saturday. It placed Capital all even overall at 8-8, and 2-2 in district, while the Bulldogs upped their overall record to 8-9 and won its fourth district contest in as many starts. For the Jags, freshman Jadyn Padilla clouted a pair of home runs in the opener, went 2-for-4, drove in three runs and scored twice.
Game two was called after three innings after Albuquerque High tallied six times in the first frame and added 10 more in the second to invoke the 15-run, three-inning mercy rule. Capital next plays district rival Los Lunas in an April 26 doubleheader.
In a non-district contest Saturday at Grants, Santa Fe Indian School won 13-0 and is 12-7 overall, with a visit from district foe West Las Vegas Tuesday.
