The surging Capital softball team won its fifth in a row

By Arnie Leshin
How about the Capital High softball team surging with five-straight wins and having an important District 5-5A doubleheader at Albuquerque Manzano Saturday.
Thursday’s 14-0 zip at non-district opponent St. Michael’s put the Jaguars at 14-9 overall and 5-3 in district. If they can get a sweep at Manzano, it would bring them with no worse than second place in district. The teams hadn’t met until now, with the Monarchs at 15-9 overall and 7-1 in district. Albuquerque High is 11-11 and also 7-1 in district.
With junior Athena Grimley allowing only one hit and pitching the five innings in the shortened run-rule contest, it was also the third shutout in this streak for head coach Dennis Hernandez’ team.
The Jags scored all the runs they would need with the 5-run first inning, then added on one in the second, six in the fourth, and two in the fifth. Freshman Emilyns, Montoya had the lone St. Michael’s hit and it came in the4 second inning.
Overall, Capital put together 18 hits, five of them doubles, and seven players had at least two in the game. Sophomore Layla Toya had a 4-for-4 contest, senior Citlay Olivas a pair of hits and drove in three runs, and freshman Brooke Salazar added two doubles and an RBI.
The Lady Horsemen (10-13) winds down with a Monday 2-3A game versus Santa Fe Indian School.
