Third straight win for visiting St. Michael’s

By Arnie Leshin
St. Michael’s baseball continued its hit parade when it hit the road and pounded West Las Vegas, 20-4, in a run-rule shortened District 2-3A game Saturday.
The Horsemen, now 15-6 overall and 7-1 in district as the frontrunner, didn’t waste any time extending their win streak to three games. They scored four times in the top of the first, added another pair in the second inning, made it a rout with a big eight in the third upping the lead to 14-0, and adding 11 more to bring the mercy rule after five innings, although the Dons at least crossed the plate with four runs in the last two frames.
St. Michael’s plays again on Friday with a District 2-3A doubleheader against visiting Raton in scheduled times of 3 and 5 p.m.
WLV dropped to 5-11 overall and 2-6 in district. It was its second straight loss.
In a 5-5A Saturday doubleheader at Albuquerque Manzano, Santa Fe High came away with a split in outscoring the home team in game one, 13-9, but routed 15-1 in game two.
The results put the Demons at 8-13 overall and brought its first district win in six outings. As for Manzano, it dropped to 5-12 overall and falling to but one triumph in six starts.
In the opener, it was scoreless after one inning, but the visitors rocked the home side’s pitching with a 7-run top of the second frame, added one more in the fifth and wrapped things up by tallying five times in the seventh.
The Monarches did trim an 8-0 deficit by scoring twice in the fourth, once in the fifth, twice more in the sixth and four times in their last at bat. They came up with 13 hits and committed four errors, while the Demons had a dozen safeties and also had a quartet of miscues.
In the closer won by Manzano, it was never close, especially after the Monarches put together a 9-run first inning and followed with four more in the next frame and a pair in the fourth as the run-rule was applied after five innings, with Santa Fe High scoring its lone run in the top of the fourth.
Santa Fe High next plays a doubleheader Saturday at district and crosstown rival Capital, and Manzano is home to Albuquerque High. After that, it’s a single game at Robertson on Tuesday, with the Cardinals at 14-5 overall and 5-1 in district with two less wins than the Horsemen.
