First pitch in the state baseball tournament is Thursday

By Arnie Leshin
The state baseball tournament has posted its seedings and rankings and the first pitch will be Thursday, but if you are searching for the state softball tournament, hang on, it will be announced Sunday by the New Mexico Activities Association.
And softball will be kind of a replica of baseball when it comes to District 2-3A. No other team in the Santa Fe Area made the hardball field, but District 2 got all of its five teams aboard, with St. Michael’s the No. 1 seed and followed by Robertson, Santa Fe Indian School, West Las Vegas, and Raton.
Same with the yellow ball teams, for that district can expect to also fill the field, with top-seeded Robertson (19-4) followed by Indian School (15-9), West Las Vegas (11-10), St. Michael’s (10-14), and Raton (4-17), although the Tigers are currently ranked 13th and will have to slip into the top dozen, and their chances aren’t that good.
The definite others in 3A are Cobre (19-7), Dexter (11-12), East Mountain (19-7), Zuni (14-6), and possibly Navajo Prep (13-12) and Tohatchi (10-12) and maybe Raton.
In A/2A, Pecos (7-11) has a shot, but not safe one as it is now 13th ranked, and might have to beat out Lordsburg (7-9). Loving is top seed at 17-5 and right behind is Tularosa (16-3).
In 5A, no chance to fit Santa Fe High and Capital in. The Demonettes (3-24) have stumbled all season, the Jaguars (11-14) won its last five before being dominated at district rival Albuquerque Manzano in a doubleheader that applied the run-rule both times and it made for a disappointing trip home. The top seed there is Carlsbad (25-1), which is also ranked No. 1 overall in the state.
In 4A, no good news for Taos, Espanola Valley and Pojoaque Valley, although Los Alamos (19-7) did make it in as a 3rd seed. The top seed there is Artesia (20-5).
Artesia is second in the overall rankings, followed by Centennial (20-6), Rio Rancho Cleveland (19-6), Alamogordo (21-5), Gallup (19-7), Albuquerque La Cueva (18-6), Rio Rancho (18-8), Hobbs (17-9), and rounding out the top 10 is Mayfield (18-8).
