NM Fires – what you can do

By Mayor Alan Webber
Dear Friends,
This is a note about the fires all around us. So many of you have asked in recent days how to be helpful, I want to share some ideas.
First, a big thank you to the courageous and hardworking firefighters who have made tremendous progress as the unprecedented winds and relentless drought continue to make conditions challenging and unpredictable. We continue to keep our firefighters and first responders in our thoughts and prayers.
Here are ways we are helping—and will continue to help—our neighbors who have been hit hardest by the fires.
The City of Santa Fe has sent firefighters and equipment to Las Vegas to keep that community safe. Here in Santa Fe, with the Red Cross, we’ve stood up the GCCC as an emergency shelter. Our Seniors division has contributed thousands of meals for hungry seniors outside Santa Fe. The Fire Department has collected and distributed essential items to communities where basics are needed the most.
There’s always more to do, here are ways you can help:

  • The All Together New Mexico Fund is collecting contributions that will go to emergency shelter, food and water distribution, and other critical services.
  • The Food Depot has a Disaster Relief Fund. They are collecting donations of money, food, water and hygiene items to provide relief to wildfire impacted communities and emergency responders in Northern New Mexico.
  • Help Mora High School Seniors have their Prom. Mora was evacuated and many homes were burned. The Governor has invited Mora High School seniors—who had high school disrupted by COVID and their senior year disrupted by fires–to hold their Prom at the Governor’s Mansion. There’s a collection fund hosted by the Center of Southwest Culture that is helping students buy dresses or rent tuxedos so they can still have the memorable prom they deserve.

I hope you’ll consider helping one of these worthy efforts.

Stay safe everyone.

With prayers for rain,

Alan
