Softball season ends for Capital after its five-game win

By Arnie Leshin
Sorry Capital softball, and it was a nice recent run, but all it took was 5 and 5 to cool you off after you visited District 2-5A rival Albuquerque Manzano for a doubleheader Saturday.
With hope of finishing no worse than second in district via a sweep, it was all for naught in a pair of double dips that went only five innings each, 14-4, in game one, and 10-0 in game two, as the run-rule was applied both times and the Jaguars finished the season at 14-11 overall and 5 -5 in district.
They did score three times in the first inning and added another run in the second of the opener, but that was it as the Monarches pounded out a dozen hits and held Capital to just five. In the shut old closer, the Jags again came away with five hits, but trialed from the start when Manzano tallied once in the first, a huge seven times in the second, and once each in the next two innings.
Capital had come into this twin bill on a five-game win streak, but even a sweep would not have gotten coach Danny Hernandez’ team into the state tournament. Manzano, 17-9, overall, might also be left out as it currently stands at No. 16 in the state 5A rankings.
