Somewhat fuzzy is about the next steps in Jacob deGrom’s potential return to the pitching rotation of the New York Mets.
This past Sunday, the two-time Cy Young Award winner threw a side session and will make a minor league rehab start.
But still no up-to-date positive news when deGrom when hung around the Mets’ dugout during the game against the San Diego Padres at Citi Field. He appeared comfortable with his teammates after tossing a side session earlier.
But Mets’ manager Buck Showalter said prior to the game that he wouldn’t publicly detail where and when deGrom will pitch next.
A 34-year-old righthander consider among the best hurdlers in the majors has not pitched in the major leagues since July 7 of last year. He missed the second half of last season because of right forearm tightness and a sprained elbow.
And he has been sidelined since late in spring training by a stress reaction in his right scapula.
He has made three injury rehabilitations appearances in the minors. He threw 34 pitches over 1 and 2/3 innings on July 3, and 36 over three frames on July 8, both for Class A St. Lucie, then over four innings for triple A Syracuse on July 14.
Also, Mets’ healing righty reliever Trevor May threw 14 pitches Sunday during a one-inning appearance for double-A Binghamton, allowing one hit and striking out one. May has not pitched for the Mets since May 2 because of right triceps inflammation.
Showalter said May likely will pitch on back-to-back days in the minors before he is activated.
