Santa Fe Hotshots Receive Sweet Thank-You from Girl Scouts

By SFNF

SANTA FE, NM – July 2, 2022 – The Santa Fe National Forest’s Santa Fe Hotshots recently enjoyed sweet recognition from Girl Scout Troop 10705 of Los Alamos, NM. The troop honored the hotshot crew by nominating the highly trained, highly experienced firefighters for the “Cookies for Hometown Heroes” program, a Girl Scout campaign that gives thanks to first responders, active military personnel and others who make an impact in our communities.

The Girls Scouts traveled to the Santa Fe Hotshots’ home base to hand deliver boxes of the iconic cookies and thank-you cards. They also recited an original poem they had composed for the occasion:

“Hello Santa Fe Hotshots!

You’re so hot, you can’t be stopped!

You’re the best because you soar above the rest!

You saved our state and now we give you our great thanks.”

This thoughtful recognition couldn’t have come at a more appropriate time, just ahead of the newly established National Wildland Firefighter Day on July 2, which recognizes the hard work and devotion of the thousands of wildland firefighters and support personnel in the national wildland fire community.

Beginning this year, every July 2 will be designated National Wildland Firefighter Day to honor the men and women who respond to 63,000 wildland fires across the U.S. every year. Wildland firefighters save lives, property, infrastructure, and natural and cultural resources from wildfires that are increasingly complex and destructive.

The Santa Fe Hotshots had just returned to base from an assignment on the Black Fire near Silver City, NM, the day the Girl Scouts came to say thank you. The crew has also worked on the Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon Fires closer to home and anticipates a busy 2022 wildfire season
