The Española Ranger District on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) will close a 1-mile segment of the Winsor Trail just south of Forest Road (FR) 102 from July 25-27 to provide for public safety during fuels reduction thinning activities in partnership with the Pueblo of Tesuque.
Trail guards will be posted to prevent forest visitors from entering the area while the work is completed. Mountain bikers and hikers will not be able to follow the Winsor Trail from Ski Santa Fe to Tesuque on those days.
The 145 acre thinning project, funded under theReserve Treaty Rights Land (RTRL) program, is part of the ongoing Pacheco Canyon Resiliency Project aimed at improving forest health and reducing fire risk. Earlier treatments within the 2,042-acre project area were instrumental in keeping the 2020 Medio Fire from crossing FR 102 and threatening significant values at risk. Fuels reduction activities will reduce stand densities primarily through thinning small-diameter trees, piling vegetation and prescribed burning.
Partners participating in the Pacheco Canyon project include the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, Tesuque Pueblo, Santa Fe County Fire Department, Los Alamos County Fire Department and City of Santa Fe Fire Department.
