Head football coach Scott Frost is taking extra steps to save his job

By Arnie Leshin
Nebraska head football coach Scott Frost is counting on transfer portals to save his job at his alma mater.
Once the Cornhuskers’ starting quarterback, his time there now is running short. He has an unimpressive 15-29 record in four years and desperately needs a turnaround after taking a $1 million pay cut and firing four offensive assistants following a weak 3-9 season.
WHis 15 portal additions are ranked No. 7 and seven or eight might even start in the opener that just happens to be against Northwestern in Dublin, Ireland, Saturday. The biggest names are defensive end Ochaun Mathis (TCU) and quarterback Casey Thompson (Texas).
Frost said the number of transfers he will pursue will vary from year to year and that 15  probably is on the high end. If he’s talking year to year, maybe he has more trust in his stay in Lincoln.
Then again, no matter how many players are added, he said, there always is a concern about how transfers blend with returning players. So far, he’s been pleased with the chemistry, and the trip to Ireland provides another opportunity for bonding.
“I couldn’t be happier with that piece and the meshing of these parts,” Frost said. “We hadn’t hit any adversity yet, and I think the first test of that will be when we hit some (adversity)”.
