Santa High’s boys soccer team, the reigning state 6A champions, lost for the first time

Defending state 6A boys soccer champion Santa Fe High lost for the first time this season in five outings and saw its 21-game win streak also halted in Tuesday afternoon‘s 2-1 non-district setback at Albuquerque Hope Christian.
The Huskies scored twice in the first half against goalkeeper Henry Kuchta, then survived a second half surge by the Demons that brought the lone goal by Cy Anderson off an assist from Nathan Kingston.
It was Hope’s fourth victory in five starts while Santa Fe High dropped to 4-1 and plays Thursday against Hobbs in the first round of the annual Albuquerque Academy Invitational.
In volleyball, Santa Fe Prep hit the road to the Albuquerque Rebels Volleyball Club and was swept in three sets by Albuquerque Cottonwood Classical, 25-12, 25-21, 25-22, in non-district play, with the last two sets close as the Griffins fell to 0-3 and plays next on Friday at in a district match at East Mountain.
In the loss, Prep did pick up 10 kills, four blocks and seven assists from Nicole Gonzalez, Emery Kurth added five kills and three blocks, while Laura McHorse came up with seven assists.
Unbeaten Pojoaque Valley won its fifth in a row by handing visiting Miyamura a 3-1 defeat in the non-district match. Sonya Quintaha and teammate Anica Urioste had a dozen kills each for the Elkettes.
Played at Ben Lujan gymnasium, Pojoaque had a tight first-set match that it lost 25-23, but then took the next three at 25-14, 25-12, 25-12,  Adiranna Rodriguez added 25 digs and six kills for the Elkettes, and Larissa Rodriguez came up with nine kills and a block, while Joslyn Nunez dished out 35 assists.
At Corona, Monte del Sol lost its second-straight at 3-0 and has its home opener Thursday versus Escalante.
Now coached by Jessica Butler, The Dragons sport an underclassmen-heavy lineup and Butler, following her mom, Chela, on the sidelines, said that the 25-20, 25-19, 25-14 loss was due to inexperience and her side is learning to play together.
