National Football League’s New York Jets

By Arnie Leshin
So here come the Jets speaking out against last season’s 53-10 rout up in New England. Yes, that was bad. How bad, well the 12th straight time the former Shea Stadium tenants lost to Bill Bellichek, the one who once accepted the head coaching job of the Jets for one day or until he found out that Bill Parcells was still head of football operations. So he resigned the next morning and instead went back to New England and accepted its head coaching position like forever.
So now the new look green and white gave out the news on television, on the radio, and whatever the media wanted to hear. Of course, it hopped on the bandwagon and announced that these Jets were going to avenge last year’s embarrasing loss and even end all these consecutive setbacks to Bellichek and the other bad guys.
But it never happened. The disappointed Jets fans exited the New Jersey venue with only the sounds of New England 22, New York 17. They did remember the decent start and their Jets in front 10-3, then 10-6, then oops their team fell behind 13-10 and never caught up.
It was a miserable day for starting quarterback Zach Wilson, as the former Brigham Young star was slow a-foot, made poor throws, at one time reacted by throwing two straight out of bounds heaves on the second and third plays in the third quarter, and was intercepted four times and sacked the same number of times.
But they still had a chance because they did force the Patriots into four field goals, and with the clock winding down in the fourth quarter, trailed only 22-10. But the Jets failed two straight times on poor Wilson throws and the lack of a good running back after rookie Brance Hall was injured last week.
Then the clock wound down to 1:48when Wilson, on fourth and one from the visitors 12, made a complete pass into the end zone, and with the point-after, it was now 22-17, but their try for an onside kick was gobbled up by the Pats, followed by two kneels, and the 3-game win streak and 5-2 overall record was now history.
Too bad, the Jets fans were getting a kick of how well the Jets were playing, with Hall from Iowa State the ground game was on the move until his season-ending knee injury last week, and the quick and confident defense was solid until this day. They even gave back an 87-yard touchdown interception early in the final quarter after it was nullified by a New York holding penalty.
Yes, not much went right. And “Here come the Jets” remains a dandy number, but not on this day. Who knows when it will bring good news, but it was great for stage and movie fans, and I in fact watched it again only recently, and one of my favorites was no doubt “Here come the Jets.” but it failed for me this time.
How about “Let’s go Jets, J-E-T-S”
