Thursday opens play in the state high school volleyball tournament

The state high school volleyball tournaments get underway Thursday, but 3A schools St. Michael’s, Robertson and Santa Fe Indian have TBA alongside them until their opponent are named, with all three scheduled for 1:15 afternoon starts on their home courts.
In 5A, Los Lunas (15-5) has won its last 11 matches but opens at Albuquerque Eldorado (17-5) at 11:30 a.m. Also in 5A, Albuquerque High (12-11) heads for Rio Rancho High (16-7) for a match scheduled at the same time. Santa Fe High, in District 5-5A, has been 8-11 overall and 5-5 in district, and Capital 10-13 overall and 3-7 in district, as they await their first-round matches.
Also in 5A, Hobbs (14-9) plays at Albuquerque Sandia (17-6) and Albuquerque Volcano Vista (12-11) heads for Cibola (14-8), with both matches slated for 11:30 starts.
As for 2-3A, Hot Springs is the 3rd seed behind the Horsemen and Cardinals, and fourth are the Braves after getting past 2A leader Laguna-Acuma. The 2-2A opener on Thursday has No. 12 Mora playing at No. 5 Escalante.
In 4-4A, Pojoaque Valley )17-3) is the fourth seed just ahead of fifth seed Los Alamos and is home to Santa Teresa (10-12) at 9:45 a.m. Thursday. At the same starting time, Los Alamos (17-6) gets a visit from Gallup (14-9), and at Silver (14-6), it plays host to Albuquerque Academy (12-11), also at 9:45.
