Big night on the road for St. Michael’s senior guard Adam Montoya

By Arnie Leshin
It was a big Tuesday night for St. Michael’s senior guard Adam Montoya and it was a relief for his team in a visiting 65-60 non-district double overtime win at Albuquerque High.

In what was his best game as a prep player, Montoya scored the game-high 48 points, five in the second overtime, as the Horsemen upped their overall record to 5-3 with their next game against Pecos on Dec. 27 in the opening round of the annual Stu Clark tournament at New Mexico Highlands.

Not only did Montoya account for the most points, but he also brought down the game-high 15 rebounds.

It was a mostly tight game throughout. St. Michael’s did outscore the Bulldogs 7-2 behind Montoya in the second overtime to claim the victory, it was the Horsemen up 15-4 after one quarter, but a 16-4 scoring run by the home side brought a 20-19 lead at halftime.

Then it really got closer. It was 33-33 after three quarters, 50-all after regulation, and  58-58 heading into the second overtime.

Said head Horsemen coach Gerard Garcia: “Yes, it was quite an all-around game for Adam. As for us, we were locked down on defense, our guys had a lot of energy, especially in the second half, and we could have folded, but didn’t. It was a good one to win on the road.”
