HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL RESULTS

Ralph Casaus was concerned as he took the short trip to Espanola McCurdy Saturday for his season opener as Monte del Sol head boys basketball coach.
“I hadn’t beaten them before,” Casaus said in regard to the Bobcats, “so it was good to open with this victory.”
It was a 53-45 win for the Dragons and now they head to Sandia Park Tuesday to play East Mountain.
In the contest at Memorial gymnasium, Casaus got stellar efforts from seniors Kevin Eriquez and Xandro Zubia. Enriquez was high scorer with 18 points, one more than Zubia. Then there was 8th-grader Ryan Eriquez, Kevin’s brother, adding 11.
At Capital High, the Jaguars evened their overall record at 2-2 by upending Albuquerque West Mesa, 60-45, with senior Santago Bencomo paving the way with 14 points, and junior Isaac Ortega tallied a dozen.
Capital raced to a 37-20 lead at halftime, but settled for only five points in the third quarter, but the Mustangs could only trim the gap to 42-30 heading into the fourth quarter. The Jags next plays Tohatchi in Tuesday’s opening round of the annual Al Armendariz tournament.
In other results, Santa Fe Indian School turned in a 43-25 girls win over visiting West Las Vegas, the Santa Fe High girls got past winless Los Alamos, 33-26, St. Michael’s girls fell to Rio Rancho, 40-27.
In other boys games, Indian School was routed 78-54, against Albuquerque Valley and Los Alamos turned back Valencia, 50-43.
