Just another close match-up

If it’s close high school girls basketball games on your mind, check out Albuquerque Sandia Prep and St. Michael’s.
 
Non-district rivals, the two got together Tuesday night at the Christian Brothers Athletic Complex and both teams hung tough until the Sundevils came away with a 40-38 win, the first home setback for St. Michael’s. 
 
Just another tight tussle for head coach Sonya Ruiz’ team after splitting with Los Alamos 37-34, and 32-30, getting past Albuquerque Academy for Technology and The Classics, 32-26, falling in overtime to Espanola Valley, 36-34, and edging Taos, 40-35. 
 
This dropped the Lady Horsemen to 7-3 overall and upped Sandia Prep to 6-1 after being shellacked 63-31 by Albuquerque St.Pius X in its opener. Did the Sundevils have any close ones, sure did, won 56-55, over Albuquerque Highland, 31-29 over Albuquerque Menaul, nipped Tularosa, 31-24, and downed Belen, 42-40. 
 
Tuesday night was an example of the tight ones these teams have played. It was 9-9 after one quarter, 22-21 Sandia Prep at halftime, 29-27 Sundevils after three quarters, and the fourth quarter brought an 11-11 tie and the final result. 
 
Other final girls scores had Santa Fe Indian School turn back Whitehorse of Utah, 53-34, Los Alamos handily topping Pecos, 48-28, Albuquerque Hope Christian rolling past Espanola Valley, 71-45, Cuba nipping Bernalillo, 50-49, and Penasco getting past Taos, 39-33. 
 
In boys play Tuesday night, St. Michael’s fell to Pecos, 65-47, in the first round of the annual Herb Clark tournament played at New Mexico Highlands. 
 
Then there was Socorro edging West Las Vegas, 53-52, Robertson winning out over Portales, 63-48, Albuquerque La Cueva romping over Santa Teresa, 76-25, and Dulce routing East Mountain, 51-21.
