By Arnie Leshin
Catch the hoops, Rio Rancho here, Rio Rancho there and the Storm and the Rams had no problem emerging victorious over Capital High Wednesday.

At the Rio Rancho High court, nothing went well for the Jaguars’ boys. Not only did their win streak come to an abrupt halt via a resounding 69-30 rout in non-district play.

The Jags had been playing well despite behind outsized, but nothing worked for them here. The Rams were much more physical, more aggressive and more energetic.

And Capital had nothing to offer besides committing 29 turnovers and the home side’s stingy perimeter defense forced the visitors into a dismal 2-for-18 outside shooting.

With this, the Jaguars toppled to 6-3 overall and were fortunate that the mercy-rule ended the contest earlier. Meanwhile, the Rams improved to 5-4 and it was tied at 2 apiece when they went on a 12-point run. It was 22-9 for Rio Rancho after one quarter, and it employed a mixture of outside shooting and drives to the basket.

It was 37-21 Rams at the intermission, but they upped the advantage with a 14-0 run to start the third quarter, and the lead soon zoomed to 55-25.

In the Jaguars’ girls game versus Cleveland, it was a 44-20 romp that brought Capital its 10th setback in 11 starts. They trailed 19-10 at the half before surging to a 37-15 advantage, and only four players scored for the Jags.

Amerie Romero led the Capital scoring with nine points, including all five of her team’s points in the second quarter. The Jaguars play next against visiting Los Alamos on Jan. 3.
