Boys and girls basketball tournament time

By Arnie Leshin
Believe it, it’s a done deal, and don’t forget to check out the spotlight girls finale tonight, with a bravo to Ray Roybal for accepting the invitation.

It’s the annual Santa Fe Indian School basketball tournament, with its boys and girls the huge favorites to carry off both championship trophies.

That’s fine, it’s their tourney and the overall field was their choice.

Except how did Roybal’s Monte del Sol girls of which he’s the only coach, get in? Well, he called on his athletic director, got the a-okay, and so set your clock for they take on the host Braves in the scheduled 6:30 girls closer tonight.

These Braves are 12-2, ranked third in class 3A, and have won their last six. These Dragons are 0-10, have scored 106 point and allowed a whooping 616, and come off a 65-1 shellacking verus Albuquerque Cottonwood.
That’s it, enough said, another embarrassment for that that program.

The girls morning opener had the combined Santa Fe Waldorf-Santa Fe Prep-Mesa Visa contest, the combo at 4-3 and Mesa Visa at 12-1, the lone loss against Dulce to break its 11-game winning streak. Catch this one.

Game two sends Laguna-Acuma (8-6) against Navajo Prep, which is 9-3 and SFIS figuring that’s its main challenge. Next is Raton (4-10) in a probable toss-up against Cuba (3-4), right here in the “City Different.” Sounds good.

Getting right to the boys, it’s Albuquerque Menaul (6-4) in the morning opener versus Moriarty (6-4), followed by Raton (6-4) versus Mesa Visa (6-6). Two pick-ams?

From the girls game, it becomes Laguna-Acuma (3-8) taking on Santa Fe Prep (4-5), and the day’s finale matching Espanola McCurdy (4-8) with those Braves, 9-4, ranked fifth in 3A, and winners of four straight and with it increasing after this one.

That’s it, quite a tournament. Just a Brave old tournament for the good of the host.
