Capital High girls come away with a 49-29

The Capital girls basketball team has a tough test Friday at District 2-3A rival Albuquerque High, but they secured a 49-29 win against visiting Albuquerque Rio Grande in district play Tuesday night.
 
Now 3-14 overall, the Jaguars had gone through a long losing streak before downing Piedra Vista on Jan. 5, but this one belonged to them with senior captain Amerie Romero tossing in a team-high 17 points, seven coming in the fourth quarter.
 
Sophomore Sania Gallegos and junior Kayla Martinez added eight points each. Friday, Capital plays the district-leading Bulldogs (14-2). 
 
In other girls play, it was Santa Fe High losing 54-31 to visiting Albuquerque High. The Demonettes fell to 5-12 overall and plays next at Los Lunas Friday.
 
Santa Fe High did hold a 12-9 lead after one quarter but the Bulldogs outscored it 19-4 in the second quarter for a 28-16 halftime advantage. The lead increased to 41-23 after three quarters. 
 
There was also Academy for Technology and The Classics turning in a 34-27 girls triumph at Estancia to up its overall mark to 10-3 and 2-0 in 2-2A. It plays on the road next on Thursday versus district foe Albuquerque Menaul. 
 
ATATC picked up a team-high 15 points from sophomore Monica Marquez, Junior Nazarae Romero contributed nine points and brought down 11 rebounds while senior Chanelle Jaeger took down the team-high 14 boards. 
 
In other girls results, Albuquerque Manzano got past Los Lunas, 43-39, Albuquerque Menaul rolled over winless Monte del Sol, 58-6, Albuquerque Sandia Prep edged Socorro, 33-31, and East Mountain nipped Albuquerque Bosque, 35-33.
