Carmen Pacheco was loud and clear in leading the St. Michael’s girls

By Arnie Leshin
Another all-around game for St. Michael’s senior Carmen Pacheco, who has returned after a recent concussion, as she paved the way to Tuesday night‘s 46-36 victory over visiting West Las Vegas in Class 2-3A play.

Pacheco came up with the game-high 20 points and took down a dozen rebounds as the Lady Horsemen broke away to a 17-11 halftime lead, and after the Dons cut the gap with 25 points after intermission, St. Michael’s got its offense going to win going away.

It was in the final quarter that the 5-foot-11 Pacheco made it into the paint to tally 10 of the team’s 18 points.

“They were really focusing on taking away senior (Lauryn) Pecos, especially in that last quarter, but Lauryn made some good passes into Carmen.”

Junior Jada Lujan and senior Madison Mossman added eight points each for the Lady Horsemen, who became 14-7 overall and 2-1 in district, and are home to district rival Raton Thursday. The Dons (10-11, 1-3) play next on Friday at Santa Fe Indian School.

In 5-5A, Capital hit the road to Albuquerque Manzano and returned with a 59-47 setback Tuesday.

The Monarchs pieced together a 45-33 advantage in the second half after the Jaguars were within 10-9 in the opening quarter and 33-24 at halftime.

Capital, 6-16 overall and 3-2 in district, picked up a team high of 11 points from senior Layla Cintron, and another 10 came from fellow senior and captain Amerie Romero, and plays next on Friday at Albuquerque Rio Grande.
