Santa Fe Indian School went two-for-two

By Arnie Leshin
It was a Wednesday nightsweep for Santa Fe Indian School in the Class 2-3A tournament, the boys gaining the semifinals Thursday at Robertson and the girls into the Friday final versus Robertson.

The Braves’ boys turned in a 66-55 win over a relentless underdog, visiting West Las Vegas team in the closer of the doubleheader at Indian School’s Pueblo Pavilion.

In the opener, it was a tight 53-49 overtime triumph for SHIS over St. Michael’s. The Braves were up 46-44 in the OT when their sophomore forward Emma Lewis tossed in a 3-pointer with 2:01 left, and then teammate Kaydence Riley did the same with a corner shot with 1:09 to go for a 49-44 lead.
That was enough to gain a third meeting against the Cardinals as Indian School advanced to 20-6 overall. Its boys upped their overall mark 19-9.

The teams exchanged buckets in the final minute of regulation
time, and both had a chance to end it then.

The Lady Horsemen had the ball with 11 seconds remaining, but Braves’ senior guard Madisen Valdez stole the ball and was fouled with 4.3 seconds left, but missed both charity tosses as the buzzer sounded.

In the overtime, St. Michael’s made one last run on junior Mariella Ruiz’ 3, but Indian School responded with four freebies down the stretch.
