Senior Kevin Enriquez showed the way

By Arnie Leshin
Another big game for Monte del Sol Charter senior wing Kevin Enriquez and a well-balanced attack for St. Michael’s as both boy’s basketball teams emerged victorious Tuesday.

While the Dragons won a key 73-69 District 2-2A game over Estancia at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center, the Horsemen turned in a 73-49 District 2-3A romp on the road over West Las Vegas.

Red-hot 6-foot-4 Enriquez was right on target with 36 points and 5-2 fellow senior Xandro Zubia added 21 as MDSC upped its overall record to 11-10 and 3-2 in district. It was a first-time win over the Bears, with the Dragons holding a first quarter lead of 11 points, and nine in the fourth.

“My boys kept their composure,” said Monte del Sol head coach Ralph Casaus. “They knocked down some shots and made some free throws down the stretch to seal this win.”

The next stop for his Dragons is at Albuquerque Menaul Thursday. Estancia dropped to 7-12 and 1-3.

At Gillie Lopez Memorial gymnasium in WLV, 5-10 sophomore guard Sabiana Rios came away with the team-high 17 points for St.Michael’s, senior Adam Montoya contributed 14 and senior Josh Sanchez 10.

Now a resounding 16-4 overall and 4-0 in district, the Horsemen head up to Raton for Friday’s district match. The Dons, 11-10 and 2-3, are home to Santa Fe Indian School Friday.
