The St. Michael’s boys track and field team moved closer to another 3A state championship after winning team honors at Saturday’s Capital City Invitational
The annual meet was held at Capital High but hosted by Santa Fe High, and the Horsemen rang up 83 1/2 points and runner-up Santa Fe High scored 66.
May 5-6 are the dates for the state 3A and St. Michael’s has won the last four after a long-time draught.
It has the usual depth for the Horsemen. In the relays, they took first in the 4 x 800 with Marcus Leyba, Daniel Kupcho, Lucas Gurule and Soren Annon, and the 4 x 400 with Kupcho, Annon, Gurule and Alex Archuleta.
It had the 300 hurdles winner in Annon hurdling 44.46, Mathias Duran taking the discus with a throw of 127-11, Leyba the javelin with a best of 141-1.
The 4 x 100 stick-pass went to Santa Fe High with a quartet of Valin Wittenburg, Owen Lock, Cy Anderson and Bryce Melton.
Melton also won the 100 meters in 10.75. In the 400, the winner was Asher Nathan of Santa Fe Prep racing 50.81, and in the long jump the Demons’ Noah Mullins was first with a 19-19 1/2 best.
Santa Fe High also copped the 1,600 sprint medley relay in 3:46.25 with the foursome of Melton, Lock, Wittenburg and Max Anderson.
Second places went to Kupcho in the 100 meters, Cy Anderson of the Demons in the 200 and 400, Daniel Busemeyer of Santa Fe High in the 800, Santa Fe Prep’s Morgan Field in the high jump, and Ernesto Valencia of Capital in the shot put.
Thus, the Horsemen had a triple winner in Annon, and double winners in Kupcho, Gurule, and Leyba. For Santa Fe High, Melton was a double winner, as were Wittenburg and Lock.
In the team scoring, Pecos placed eighth with 21 points, Santa Fe Prep ninth with 16, Capital 14th with eight, and ATATC 15th with 6 1/2.
