Now 4-0 in 2-3A, St. Michael’s baseball team fell behind

By Arnie Leshin
The St. Michael’s baseball team battled back from a 4-1 gap to grab a 9-8 win over visiting Class 2-3A Raton Wednesday afternoon

Now 7-5 overall and a perfect 4-0 in district, the Horsemen are home again Thursday against non-district opponent Albuquerque Hope Christian.

Here, it took a five-run fifth frame to go in front in a game that brought errors in the field and mentally.

“Yeah,” said head coach Augustin Ruiz, “we didn’t exactly run the bases well and were running into outs. We did piece things together and escape with the win.

And he added that his Horsemen also contributed some defensive miscues in the first two innings.

But on the positive side, they got a 4-for-4 game from sophomore Santiago Martinez with his pair of doubles and same number of RBI. Senior right-hander Rahul Williams got his initial start on the mound and toiled six-plus frames.

Williams, who usually came upon relief efforts, yielded six earned runs, 10 hits, walked two and struck out eight.

The Tigers are now 4-6 and have a district doubleheader at West Las Vegas Saturday.

In other baseball action at Capital, Santa Fe High turned in a 11-1 rout in a non-district 5A contest versus its crosstown rivals to improve to 10-5 overall and drop the Jaguars to 4-9 overall.

Led by a 3-for-3 game from senior Gabe Lomayestewa who brought a double, a triple, an RBI and scored once, the Demons had a dozen hits and six were for extra bases.

Then there was junior teammate Ivan Ortega with 4-for-4, a home run shy of the cycle, and a quartet of RBI. From the hill, senior Adam Alvarez gave up an unearned run over four innings and whiffed five.

Both return to district play Saturday with doubleheaders, Santa Fe home to Los Lunas and Capital at Albuquerque High.

In softball, the Lady Horsemen trounced visiting Raton, 12-3, in 2-3A to put their overall record at 4-7 and 1-3 in district.

Next they play a non district contest against visiting Albuquerque Hope Christian on Thursday.

Senior Carmen Pacheco came away with a walk and two ribbies, junior Mia Duran added a hit to go with two base on balls and scored twice, and in the circle, freshman Erianna Sisneros tossed a 5-hitter while allowing the three runs, and fanning two.

The Tigers fell to 1-10 overall, 0-4 in district, and are at West Las Vegas Thursday.
