BRIANNA STEWART AND NAPHEESA COLLIER TO START NEW BASKETBALL LEAGUE

By Arnie Leshin
Breaking news from three former University of Connecticut women’s basketball, all having played on the Huskies’ national championship teams.

Wing standout Gabby Willams has just returned from playing in the league in France and is upset about the prioritizing ruling that doesn’t allow play in both the league abroad and the WNBA.

“I’m not for it,” said Williams, “but was able to get past another season and am happy about it. I just love to play and without the league in France, we are limited, so I’ll stay with it until the rule forces us to withdraw.”

Williams said she’s anxious to look over the new women’s league being organized by other former UCONN standouts Brianna Stewart and Napheesa Collier.

Presently, details are being discussed for what would be labeled the Unrivaled League, with Stewart a forward and Most Valuable Player with the New York Liberty and Collier starring at the same position for the Minnesota Lynx.

Stewart and Collier say they look to apply new ideas, and already this new hoops adventure would have about 30 top-notch players with 3-on-3 play added and 0-1 in Miami as sound stage.

Thus far the dates scheduled for the new league would be January through March.

“Hopefully,” said Stewart, “we can do well on our WNBA pay as the new league comes about. Players like us are anxious to play wherever we can.”

As for Williams, she’s happy to be back home from France and has already been in conversation with Stewart and Collier.

“Maybe” she said in regard to playing aboard rule, “France should have a shorter season. As for a new league being pieced together by Brianna and Napheesa, I’m for it.”
