J0EY CHESTNUT WINS 16TH NATHANS FAMOUS HOT DOG EATING CONTEST

By Arnie Leshin
It took a 2-hour nasty weather delay before Joey Chestnut made sure the annual Nathans Hot Dog Eating contest would go on and him winning for the 16th time on the Fourth of July in Coney Island.

The contest was initially scheduled to begin at noon, but due to severe weather that included a long downpour and lightning, the news broke that the festive event had been completely cancelled, but Chestnut make sure it was only a postponement.

He came there Tuesday with all intent to compete and when the downpour and lightning had subdued, he called out that it was time to produce the hot dogs and buns for both the women and men who competed.

And he, just as George Washington crossing the Delaware River in 1776, would not be denied. He quickly took charge.

“The dog eating contest is going to happen,” he called out to the huge turnout that stood around in the nasty weather, “

And they did, the whistle sounded at 2:18 and the eating began.

Mikki Sudo, 37 years old, won the women’s contest for the ninth time by gobbling down 39.5 and she needed every single second of the 10 minutes to nail down the event, and the half-dog pushed her over the line against the next two that tightly trailed.

The 39-year-old Chestnut downed 62 hot dogs to tally 14 more than the runner-up. Sixty two is below his projected total, which was expected to be 71-72 dogs and buns, but the lengthy delay affected everyone’s ability to eat in top form.

But no matter, he was again the winner and still champion for the eighth straight time.

Whether or not he was personally responsible for the contest being rescheduled, but out of nowhere, he raised his voice, looked up at the clearing skies, and while everyone got a unique introduction, Chestnut’s was by far the best.

And just like that, it was Hot Dog time.
