Yanks and Mets fade in the standings

By Arnie Leshin
Tough to recognize them, but down and a out are two Major League baseball teams from two boroughs.

For a hint, just mention the Bronx and Queens, and there you have it.

They still wear their pinstripes at home games, but otherwise the depleted Bronx Bombers’ New York Yankees are so out of it, there’s even calls to replace manager Aaron Boone.

Boone has been there for quite some time and has done fairly well, but this season has found him leading the majors in ejections, recently back-to-back times, plus he has gone on several rages dealing with his players.
And forget his pennant winning home run while playing for the Yanks. That was ages ago, these days are a different story.

They, too, are at home tonight, but it’s against the major league-best Braves, who are no doubt upset after losing 7-6 to the Mets after shellacking them 21-3 and 6-0 in a doubleheader.

Wonder what the Yankees can expect through the gates as they keep dropping. And wonder if they might make any moves, and if the Mets might make more.

Unusual of course to see both the New York clubs struggling. But now it becomes the home stretch of what was known as the second half of the campaign.

Will Boone and Showalter be replaced? Let’s leave it at that, who knows, maybe New York, New York might have better days, but don’t count on it.
Boone’s Yankees are stuck in last place 13 games out in the East Division of the American League, 60-56, and two games ahead of the rival Boston Red Sox.

As far as the wild card goes, not even “Daniel Boone” could bring a wake-up call, for like the Mets the Yanks are eight games behind and trail six other teams.

Fifteen teams in the league and the Yankees are eighth best.
Sounds bad, well here comes the other team, the New York Mets all dazzled up in their blue and orange, are 11th of the 15 NL franchises.

They are the sad sacks with a 53-65 record, and until they’ve falling lower, they at least had next-to-last to themselves. Now the Washington Nationals (53-66) are chasing them.

But tonight at Citi Field, Mets’ manager Buck Showalter is also on the hot seat that doesn’t include the nation’s hot climate.

And they will welcome the Pittsburgh Pirates after dropping three of four at home versus the Atlanta Braves.

So it goes like this, in come the also  fading Bucs to Queens tonight with an identical 53-65 record as the Mets, so perhaps it could be a wake-up call for the home crowd.

Except, you might expect the Mets home attendance to cool off after dealing away several veterans, name players, and bringing aboard what’s called prospects.

Thus, for the New York, New York teams, that’s the current bad news. Hopefully things will turn around and become better, but it sure doesn’t look like it.
