ALBUQUERQUE ACADEMY EXTRAVAGANT 5,000 METERS

The 5,000-meters warm-up for the upcoming state cross country championships ran Saturday as the annual extravaganza hosted by Albuquerque Academy and St. Michael’s came away with the boys 3A winner in senior Landon Sandoval, and the boys team title went to SF Indian School. 

Sandoval was timed in 16:17.85, but the Lady Horsemen freshman phenom Chloe Grieco raced 18:26.57 and had to settle for second place on the heels of Albuquerque Sandia Prep senior Kate Henderson, who ran 18:16.28 in a close race over the Albuquerque Academy course where the state championships will be run.

Third here was Santa Fe Prep sophomore Sophie Bair in 19:49.99, and these three were the only ones that went under 20 minutes.

In the girls 3A team scoring, Sandia Prep placed first with 63 points, a dozen ahead of Santa Fe Prep, and Santa Fe Indian School finished fourth with 105 points, and with its best finisher junior Destiny Chino taking sixth in  20:39.68.  

In Sandoval’s race, Indian School took team honors with 58 points, with the Braves top spot going to sophomore Kale Loretto in 16:52.63. Second best among the teams was Navajo Prep with 80 points.
