SANTA FE HIGH SWEEPS LOS LUNAS

By Arnie Leshin
It was a District 5-5A soccer sweep time for Santa Fe High Saturday over Los Lunas, with the boys winning at home 6-0, and the girls taking their match 5-2 on the road.

The soaring Demonettes came away with their goal totals coming in half number two and thus gaining the top spot.

Ranney Smith’s penalty kick tally three minutes into the second half tied it at 1-1and Asha Smelser’s goal in the 60th minute gave the visitors the 2-1 lead for good, followed by Laila Carter’s insurance goal four minutes later.

Thus it was Los Lunas with a stellar start and Santa Fe High with the dominating finish. Next for Santa Fe High will be with a first visit Monday from 5-5A first place Rio Rancho Cleveland.

In boys soccer play between the two, this time it was the Demons again in a 6-0 zip over visiting Los Lunas. It put Santa Fe High at 6-5 overall and 2-0 in district, while the Tigers dropped to 3-9 and 1-1.

The Demons play next at visiting district rival Albuquerque Manzano on Wednesday. This time they picked up a three-goal hat trick from Chris Solano, plus he was credited with all three assists.

Because of injuries and illness, Santa Fe only dressed 13 players, thus the rapid first-half goals made the outcome moot.
