Unbeaten Georgia does what it can to stay on top

By Arnie Leshin
Undefeated No. 1 Georgia would rather be safe than sorry, safe with a close-clash 3-point win at unranked Auburn Saturday, and sorry it had to again be another late football comeback.

The recent one like this 28-25 triumph at the Tigers was almost to a day of last year’s rally to overtake unranked Clemson, and also remain on top of the heap. It didn’t drop the Bulldogs as much as it did last time the week before, but the poll rankings did shorten.

Two weeks ago, Georgia had 1,752 points. Monday, it came away with 1,581. Next, it plays at unbeaten Kentucky, which rolled past No. 24 Florida by a pair of touchdowns, and with the Wildcats now in the polls for the first time this season, and at No. 15.

But up nearer the front is No. 2 Michigan, third is Ohio State, fourth is Texas, fifth is Florida State, sixth is Penn State, then comes surging Washington at seventh, Oregon moved to No. 8, Alabama is hanging around at No. 11, at 12 is Washington State, North Carolina at 14, Oregon State at 15, No. 16 is Mississippi, No. 17 is Miami, Utah 18th, Duke 19th.

Then looking back from there to No. 25 is Missouri, Tennessee, Louisiana State, Fresno State, and Louisville.

Starting with the initial seven, seventeen teams are undefeated.

It’s been so far a stellar campaign for Washington (7) and Washington State (13), Oregon (8) and Oregon State (15). It’s not always that successful for these four schools, but they are sure enjoying it this time.
