Santa Fe National Forest monitoring the Horsethief Fire in the Pecos wilderness

Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) fire managers on the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District discovered a small remote fire in the Pecos wilderness on Wednesday Nov. 1, 2023. The fire was likely caused by lightning which occurred in the area Tuesday Oct. 24, 2023. The Horsethief Fire is approximately 3 acres and is smoldering and creeping at low intensity around the strike tree creating visible light wispy smoke.

The Horsethief Fire is located north of National Forest System (NFS) Trail 288 (Cave Creek) approximately 3 miles northeast of Panchuela Trailhead. Due to the remoteness and inaccessible location, fire managers are observing the fire from Forest Road (FR) 555.

Fire managers are currently considering long-term fire spread potential, fire history in the area, seasonal weather patterns, resource availability and other factors as they develop a plan to manage the Horsethief fire. There are currently no evacuations or threats to communities or infrastructure from the fire.

Fire managers will provide periodic updates as more information becomes available or if a change in status occurs on the SFNF Facebook page and Website.
