Our Approach

In New Mexico, more than 157,000 people have diabetes, yet only 116,000 know they have it. The incidence of diabetes is higher among adults over age 65 and among the poor. Obesity and poverty also contribute to the prevalence of diabetes.

It’s a serious situation for New Mexicans. Untreated and uncontrolled, diabetes can lead to congestive heart failure, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, blindness, and amputation. It’s costly, too. The medical expenses for those with diabetes are more than twice as high than for people without diabetes. It’s a disease that stops people from working and living an enjoyable life.

CHRISTUS St. Vincent recognizes the seriousness of diabetes in New Mexico. Through our Diabetes Center of Excellence, we’re addressing the problem through treatment, education and research. If you or a family member has diabetes or is at risk of diabetes, seek care. Diabetes can be controlled and your life can be healthy and happy.
