March is Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Month. Take an OHV education class to learn how you can reduce your risk.

March is Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Month, which is recognized every year and provides an opportunity to raise awareness of traumatic brain injury (TBI) prevention and improve the quality of life for those impacted by TBI.

New Mexicans can protect their children from traumatic brain injuries by following a few helpful safety tips while recreating on their off-highway vehicles (OHVs):

  • Wear helmets while operating their OHVs, which include ATVs, ROVs, dirt motorcycles and snowmobiles.
  • Make sure children are operating appropriately sized OHVs.
  • Take an approved safety course to ensure proper techniques are taught.
  • Be aware of the signs and symptoms of a concussion.
  • If your child has a head injury, don’t hesitate to take them to a healthcare provider.

OHV in-person classes are currently scheduled in Albuquerque and Roswell.

For information on recognizing, responding to, and minimizing the risk of concussion or other serious brain injury, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention HEADS UP Resource Page.

To register for a safety class or learn more about OHV laws and rules, contact the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish OHV program office at (505) 222-4712 or send email to DGF-OHVEDU@dgf.nm.gov.

Hunter Education - Eye Dom

Attention Hunters: Now is the time to start giving back

Interested in becoming a volunteer or a hunter education instructor?

These are the steps that it takes to become a volunteer for the Department.

Start by emailing the Volunteer Coordinator, Chris Jarvis, and letting him know that you are interested in volunteering. Chris will send you the volunteer application forms.

Fill out the forms and return them to Chris Jarvis. When your application forms are returned, the Department will conduct a background check for any felony convictions or flagrant violations of Game and Fish laws.

Upon passing the background check, you will be asked to complete a free online ChildSafe course that generally takes about an hour.

Once we have received your ChildSafe certificate, you will be cleared to volunteer and we will add you to our volunteer system.
