Feeling the Heat in Santa Fe?

The City of Santa Fe is conducting a community Urban Heat Island Mapping Study and is now looking for volunteers to support this effort! The purpose of the study is to collect on-the-ground data on the heat experienced by the Santa Fe community.

The term “urban heat island” refers to the fact that cities get much warmer than their surrounding landscapes. Urban areas can experience temperature highs that are 15°F to 20°F warmer than surrounding, rural areas and often the heat is not evenly distributed throughout the entire city.

As a participant in this project, you will:

  • Receive early access to the final report

  • Help collect temperature data around Santa Fe

  • Learn about heat mitigation strategies for your community

  • Learn about how climate change is affecting New Mexico and Santa Fe

Volunteer Info:

What: One 1hr training & One 1hr volunteer shift

When: June 30th

Where: Starting Point – Ft. Marcy Park

To collect heat data, heat sensing equipment will be attached to car windows and volunteers will drive around Santa Fe, following pre-designed routes. All volunteers will be required to attend an online training session to learn how to use the heat sensing equipment and collect the data. Volunteers will be paired up to fulfill one of two roles: Driver or Navigator. Directions will be provided and an app will provide step-by-step directions as well.

The day of the study, volunteers will check-in and pick up sensing equipment at Ft. Marcy Park. Then, they will drive their assigned route, and return equipment to the check-in point after the route has been completed. Water and snacks will be available and a gas stipend will be provided to each volunteer who drives. Volunteer shifts are at 6am, 3pm, and 7pm. Routes will take approximately 1hr to drive. Volunteers may sign up for multiple shifts.
