Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) fire managers were notified of a new wildfire start, named the Porter Wildfire, located six miles northwest of the Village of Jemez Springs and approximately five miles southwest of Fenton Lake, the morning of Monday October 7, 2024. Resources were on scene immediately managing the fire with a strategy of full suppression.
The wildfire is 30 acres and cause is under investigation. Smoke may be visible from Forest Road 376. Fire crews have containment lines around the fire using handline, roads, and natural features. Last night, the wildfire stayed within the fire perimeter and is smoldering in grass, oak, and ponderosa. Fire managers will spend today mopping up, which means extinguishing or removing burning material near control lines down to the mineral soil. Currently, the Porter Wildfire poses no threat to people or property.
This will be the only update provided unless fire behavior significantly changes. To learn more about fire management visit the SFNF website, NM Fire Information, and SENF social media pages (Facebook and X).
