The production team from CBS News “60 Minutes” contacted us earlier this year expressing interest in visiting the “Lowrider Bike Club” exhibit on display at our museum for a segment they were working on about Low Rider culture in New Mexico. What a great experience to have the crew here filming the bikes and interviewing Ben Sandoval, director of Española’s YMCA Teen Center, about the exhibit and the amazingly talented youth whose work we were honored to display.
Thank you Ben and all those who helped make the “Lowrider Bike Club” exhibit happen, thank you “60 Minutes” for sharing this story with millions of people, and most of all, THANK YOU to all the youth artists for creating this beautiful artwork that has inspired generations of visitors to NMHA!
Vicente Telles has recently had one of his paintings selected in the National Portrait Gallery’s 2025 Outwin Boocheber Portrait Competition! Less than 40 pieces were selected out of over 3,000 entries! The National Portrait Gallery’s triennial Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition celebrates excellence in the art of portraiture. It is the realization of Virginia Outwin Boochever’s gift to the Smithsonian and the nation, a testament to the transformative power of one individual to make an impact. Every three years, artists living and working in the United States are invited by the museum to submit one of their recent portraits to a panel of experts. The selected artworks reflect the compelling and diverse approaches contemporary artists are using to convey their personal and collective stories through portraiture.
Vicente is an Albuquerque artist who has had his work on display at our museum in multiple exhibits and makes both traditional style retablos and contemporary works. In all of them is a deep knowledge of New Mexico’s history. Vicente’s work is currently on exhibit at NMHA’s “Ugly History of Beautiful Things” on display through the end of this year.
