Santa Fe National Forest Christmas Tree Permits Available November 14

Create a memorable experience with your friends and family by cutting your own Christmas tree on the Santa Fe National Forest. Purchase a Christmas tree permit online or in-person at the Supervisor’s Office in Santa Fe, N.M. and all Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) District Offices starting Thursday November 14 at 8:00 a.m.

through December 31, 2024.

Purchase your permit the following ways:

  • Online through recreation.gov starting November 14. After purchasing, print the permit and place it on the dashboard of your vehicle before cutting your tree. Note that a digital image on your smartphone is not considered a valid permit.
  • Starting November 14, in-person Christmas tree permit sales begin at the Supervisor’s Office in Santa Fe, N.M., and Cuba, Coyote, Jemez, Española, and Pecos/Las Vegas District Offices. Contact us for current hours.
  • Permits will be sold in-person at the Walatowa Visitor Center only on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from November 30 through December 21, 2024.
  • Pre-cut Christmas Trees will be available for purchase at the Cuba, Coyote, Jemez, and Española District Offices starting November 14, 2024. Availability is subject to weather conditions and supply, with priority given to people who are unable to cut their own tree.

The SFNF’s nonrefundable Christmas tree permits are $10. Permits purchased online through recreation.gov will include an additional $2.50 service fee. One tag is valid for a tree up to five inches in diameter and 10 feet in height. Trees taller than 10 feet and/or wider than five inches require an additional tag. For example, a 15-foot tree requires two tags.

As part of the Every Kid Outdoors program, every fourth grader is eligible for a free Christmas tree permit with a valid Every Kid Outdoors pass. Go to the Every Kid Outdoors website complete the voucher and bring the voucher or the durable pass to a Forest Service office or use on Recreation.gov to receive one holiday tree permit free-of-charge! There is a transaction fee of $2.50 if Every Kid Outdoors tree pass is obtained online.

Permit holders should be prepared for unpredictable weather changes and colder conditions at higher elevations. SFNF Christmas tree permits are valid only on land within forest boundaries.
