On Saturday, fire managers from the Jemez Ranger District completed the 43-acre Triangle pile burn project. This project is located near the community of La Cueva, adjacent to Forest Road 376 and Forest Road 604. Meanwhile, fire managers from the Coyote Ranger District finished the 95-acre Gobernador pile burn unit, located at the northern end of the district near Forest Road 169.
On Friday, the Española Ranger District completed 10 acres of the 52-acre North Ridge pile burn unit, part of the Hyde Park Wildland Urban Interface project located next to Black Canyon Campground. Additionally, the Cuba Ranger District completed 69 acres of the 77-acre Deer Lakes pile burn project.
Over the coming months, fire managers will continue to look for ideal weather conditions to conduct pile burn projects throughout the forest. The decision to proceed with each pile burn will depend on several factors, including snowpack, fuel moisture levels, air quality, ventilation, forecast weather conditions, wind, and resource availability.
Once pile burn projects are completed, resources will shift towards patrolling and monitoring these units. Fire crews will utilize infrared detection devices, such as handheld thermal cameras and Uncrewed Aerial Systems (fixed-wing or drones), to assist in determining when to call out the pile burns.
