SFNF Plans to Implement Pile Burns at the Start of the New Year

In case winter decides to reappear, fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) want to prepare and take advantage of potential moisture to implement previously announced pile burns. Pile burn ignitions can happen as early as Monday, Jan. 6, 2025, or later, pending conditions such as snowpack, air quality, forecast weather and wind, and resource availability.

Generally, pile burns produce less smoke and burn with less intensity, but local communities may experience short duration smoke impacts. Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory concerns are encouraged to take precautions.
