Legislative Update and Valentine Devo!

Dear Friends,

Happy Valentine’s Day from NMFAM! As we celebrate a day of love, let’s remember- we can still love those who don’t agree with us! Today and everyday, accept the challenge to love people in a way that points to Jesus! He saw us as worthy of love so we ought to see others in this same way.

Legislative Updates:

We have important updates on two key bills making their way through the New Mexico Legislature, and we need your help to make an impact!

HB185 – Women’s Sports Bill

Yesterday, HB185, the Protection of Women’s Sports Act, was heard in committee. Expert testimony was provided by Payton McNabb, a former volleyball player who suffered severe injuries, including permanent brain damage, partial paralysis, and memory issues, after being hit in the head during a game against a male player. Kim Russel, a former lacrosse coach with a combined 27 years of coaching experience, also testified, sharing firsthand insights on the importance of protecting women’s sports.

Following expert testimony and public comments from both supporters and opponents, the committee voted to table the bill, effectively killing it without taking a direct vote. The decision fell along party lines, with all four Democrat women on the committee voting in favor of tabling the bill. Instead of taking a clear stance by voting for or against the bill, they chose to avoid direct accountability, leaving the issue unresolved for the many athletes and advocates who came forward to testify.

A huge thank you to everyone who showed up, testified, or emailed their representative in support of protecting fairness in women’s sports. Your voice truly makes a difference!

HB27 – Action Needed!

HB27, the “Librarian Protection Act”, is scheduled for a committee hearing on Monday, February 17, and we need as many people as possible to provide public comments. This bill forces public libraries to comply with the American Library Association’s (ALA) agenda, undermining local control and parental rights by dictating what materials can be offered, including controversial and potentially harmful content. This bill strips communities of their right to decide what is best for their children and forces taxpayers to support materials that may conflict with their values. We must act to protect local decision-making and ensure public libraries remain accountable to their communities.
