MARCH AND APRIL 2025
THIRD ANNUAL YOUTH ARTIST EXHIBITION
Thank you to artists Rhonda Crespin, Jean Anaya Moya, and Cleo Romero for teaching a workshop for youth at the museum last weekend! The young artists learned about tin, straw applique, and retablos from these award winning artists. They also learned about the history of the art forms by visiting our current exhibit “100 Years of Collecting | 100 Years of Connecting.” It was a wonderful day of mentorship and learning! This workshop serving our community’s youth was made possible through a collaboration with the Atrisco Heritage Foundation.

Next up, these New Mexican youth curators will present their work in an exhibition in conversation with the Spanish Colonial Arts Society collection, which they studied during their workshop. Be sure to attend the exhibition opening on March 29! (More details below.)

UPCOMING LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
FOR FAMILIES

Do you know a fourth grader enrolled in the Santa Fe Public School District? Keep your eyes out for a District-wide announcement about spring cooking and culture classes for SFPS fourth graders offered at our museum in collaboration with our community partner Cooking with Kids (CWK), a beloved nonprofit serving youth in the public schools of Santa Fe, Española, Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo, and Las Vegas, New Mexico for nearly 30 years. Ours is the first site where CWK has offered classes in a residential rather than commercial or school setting with family members joining in the process. We ran several pilot programs last year with Cooking with Kids and are glad to be able to offer both weekday and weekend options for kids this spring!

Last year we completed restoration of our historic kitchen with support from the National Trust for Historic Preservation Cynthia Woods Mitchel Fund for Historic Interiors. Because we have the unique ability to pair cooking lessons on the historic foodways of New Mexico with historic cooking utensils and other objects from our collection, readings, and other materials from our library and archive, we are able to to create well-rounded cooking and culture lessons, which distinguish our programs from typical cooking classes. Additional courses open to the general public will be developed as part of our lifelong learning educational programming. Properly revived, our historic kitchen has come back to life as the heart of the home.

FOR CONTINUING YOUR EDUCATION

Our partnership with Santa Fe Community College Continuing Education continues to thrive as we offer a new kind of learning experience focused on the arts represented in our Permanent Collection. This class offers a combination of lectures, exhibit tours, and visiting our collections storage to see examples of the art forms discussed. Keep an eye out for the Santa Fe Community College Continuing Education summer catalog for times and dates. These courses have been a fun and informative experience for all!

“Heritage Arts of New Mexico
Part lecture and part behind-the-scenes tour, this course will discuss the history of heritage arts in New Mexico through the lens of museums, art markets, and patrons. The Spanish Colonial Art Society’s extensive collection will serve as a visual example of the influences, materials, and artists who contributed to creating the unique art forms still practiced in this state today. From tinwork to straw applique to lowriders, this will serve as a great introduction to the unique arts of New Mexico.”

FOR THOSE LOOKING TO TRY SOMETHING NEW

Come learn a traditional art form! Colcha Club meets the second Thursday of every month here at the museum. The group is a mix of experienced artists and beginners! Colcha superstar Julia Gomez is on hand to teach this traditional art form to newcomers and welcomes colcha artists with all levels of experience. To register, email museum@spanishcolonial.org.

SPECIAL EVENT:
HIGHLIGHTS OF JOHN GAW MEEM’S REGIONAL DESIGN

The tour of the Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Organic Farm (1930-1933) highlights Meem’s elegant residential ranch style in Albuquerque’s magnificent pastoral North Valley and includes a tour of the farm, gardens, original Meem-designed ranch house (now an inn) and the elegant Meem-designed La Quinta Event Center. Speakers include Dr. Audra Bellmore, John Gaw Meem Curator and architectural historian at the University of New Mexico; Judith Phillips, landscape designer and author of five books and numerous articles encouraging people to garden with a passion for the high desert; and Matthew Rembe, Executive Director of Los Poblanos since 2004, who grew up on the property and envisioned a long-term plan for its future—taking it from a small B&B operated by his parents to a nationally recognized destination farm resort.
