Today the U.S. Supreme Court rules 6-3 in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic that states can defund Planned Parenthood. The court upheld South Carolina’s right to defund the abortion giant by disqualifying abortion businesses from its Medicaid program.
“The Supreme Court’s ruling in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic is a historic victory for life, affirming South Carolina’s right to exclude Planned Parenthood from Medicaid funding. This decision empowers states like New Mexico to redirect taxpayer dollars to life-affirming healthcare providers that truly support women and families,” said Elisa Martinez New Mexico Alliance for Life Executive Director. “The majority of American voters stand with us in opposing Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer-funded abortion empire. We call on state and federal leaders to act swiftly to defund Planned Parenthood and prioritize the sanctity of life.”
In fact, New Mexico Alliance for Life signed 150+ organization-coalition letter urging Congress to DEFUND PLANNED PARENTHOOD, as the US Senate is expected to vote on this urgent measure by JULY 4th. Learn more here.

What Does This Mean for New Mexico?
The Medina ruling confirms that states, including New Mexico, have greater authority to exclude Planned Parenthood from Medicaid programs without facing federal lawsuits from patients. This decision removes a major legal obstacle, empowering our state to redirect Medicaid funding away from abortion businesses and toward healthcare providers that respect the dignity of all human life, born and unborn.
While the Medina ruling focuses on non-abortion services, it opens the door for New Mexico to take bold steps to limit Planned Parenthood’s access to taxpayer dollars. This is a critical opportunity to ensure that our state’s resources support life-affirming healthcare options, like community health centers, that serve women and families without profiting from abortion.
Building on Our Pro-Life Foundation
In New Mexico, we continue to uphold the sanctity of life despite challenges posed by the 1998-1999 New Mexico Right to Choose/NARAL v. Johnson decision, which mandates Medicaid funding for medically necessary abortions under the state constitution. The Medina ruling does not directly overturn this state-level precedent, but it provides a powerful tool for pro-life advocates to push for policies that prioritize life.

A Decade of Impact: NMAFL’s Historic Aborted Baby Body Part Investigation
Earlier this week, June 24, 2025, marked the third anniversary of the historic Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, which overturned the unconstitutional Roe v. Wade. It’s also a pivotal milestone for the New Mexico Alliance for Life (NMAFL). On June 23, 2016, nearly a decade ago, the Congressional Select Panel on Infant Lives issued its first criminal referral regarding an illicit fetal tissue harvesting program between the University of New Mexico (UNM) and Southwestern Women’s Options (SWO). This action stemmed from NMAFL’s relentless two-year investigation, which delivered unprecedented results: ending UNM’s horrific fetal tissue harvesting program, barring researchers, prompting a top administrator’s early retirement, and more (read below).

Ten years ago, NMAFL conducted a groundbreaking investigation into fetal tissue harvesting at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center (UNMHSC). Our findings exposed shockingly unethical, horrific and potential illegal practices, resulting in major pro-life victories. Learn more about out ground-breaking fetal tissue investigation inthis video interview podcast with our partners at Pro-Life San Francisco.
Unethical Practices Uncovered: UNMHSC used taxpayer dollars to fund malpractice insurance for Curtis Boyd, an elderly abortionist and “assistant professor” at UNM, despite his lack of board certification in obstetrics, gynecology, or family medicine—a violation of UNM’s own policies. Following NMAFL’s exposé, UNMHSC revoked Boyd’s assistant professor position.
Quid Pro Quo Arrangements: UNM’s partnership with SWO ensured a steady supply of aborted fetal tissue for research, raising serious ethical and legal concerns.
– Potential Legal Violations: NMAFL uncovered SWO’s failure to obtain lawful informed consent from women regarding the use of their aborted babies’ organs and body parts for research, in potential violation of federal and state laws and human research protocols, (see infographic above).
PRO-LIFE VICTORIES:
Through our relentless two-year investigation, strategic partnerships and public advocacy–including partners like YOU, together we deliver results:
– UNMHSC terminated its resident abortion training program at SWO.
– UNMHSC ended its nearly 20-year fetal tissue harvesting and research program.
– Key figures retired, resigned or moved: including former UNMHSC Chancellor Paul Roth, retired early after being recorded admitting to the use of a 27-week aborted baby’s brain in a high school summer camp experiment. Researcher Robin Ohls was barred from her lab, and nearly all individuals tied to the program resigned, retired, or relocated.
– UNMHSC severed its scandalous partnership with SWO.
These victories highlight the power of truth, advocacy and strategic partnerships with supporters like YOU.
Looking Ahead
With our new partnership with the ACLJ, NMAFL is poised to intensify our efforts to investigate, expose and MOST IMPORTNATLY, hold the the abortion industry accoutable in New Mexico. Stay tuned for a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!
