Highlights: Active fire behavior due to warmer temperatures and strong winds prompts aerial support and strategic firing operations to achieve full suppression of the Laguna fire. Increased smoke production can be expected in the area.
Fire Activity: The Laguna fire remains a full suppression fire and firefighters will continue their efforts today to achieve that goal. Due to warmer temperatures and gusty winds associated with passing thunderstorms, heightened fire activity is expected along the north and east portions of the fire. Road preparation will continue along Forest Service Road 151 and crews will continue preparing and grading the Gallina Mountain Road as a contingency line and to provide safer access for equipment and personnel. Today, crews will carry on debris chipping in the area to reduce the amount of readily available fuel for the fire and to prepare for further strategic ignition work.
Air operations completed suppression efforts along the eastern portion of the fire by creating a water barrier where access by foot is restricted by rough terrain, and crews will continue strategic ignition work in that area. These strategic ignitions are necessary to reduce available fuels and strengthen efforts to achieve full suppression of the fire but may lead to increased smoke production in surrounding communities. The public is encouraged to stay informed through official updates and smoke outlooks posted online.
Weather: Dry air and low humidity will inhibit thunderstorm development today, but isolated storms can be expected with strong winds coming from the west. Storm motion will be faster than yesterday and will favor strong and erratic wind shifts, up to 15 to 20 miles per hour, with the potential for heavy rainfall. Partly cloudy conditions will develop and continue into tonight, with lingering storms possible in the vicinity but diminishing after midnight. Smoke: Area residents can expect to see continued smoke from the Laguna Fire. Please use caution when driving in the area.
