Help teach the next generation of hunters!

Are you an experienced hunter who wants to share their expertise with youngsters just getting involved in hunting for the first time? The Department of Game and Fish has just the opportunity you’re looking for!

The Department will host a Hunter Education Instructor Training Workshop for those looking to

become certified hunter education instructors on Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Department’s Northwest Area office in Albuquerque. Participants will become certified to teach both the traditional and field day courses, and instructors who don’t already have a required New Mexico hunter education number can gain that certification through this workshop.

There are several steps that interested applicants must complete before registering. First, they must have a valid Customer Identification Number (CIN) account with the Department — click here to create an account if you don’t already have one.

Then, they must complete the required volunteer application documents, which are available by emailing Conservation Education Manager Storm Usrey. Once this is complete, they can register for the class through their CIN account.

Get Involved!

Come make your voice heard! The New Mexico State Game Commission will meet Friday, Aug. 15, in the Reserve Independent Schools Gymnasium at 24 Mountaineer Rd. in Reserve.

The meeting begins at 9 a.m. and includes multiple opportunities for the public to provide comment. A full agenda is available here. If you are unable to attend in person, you can register to attend virtually via the Zoom videoconferencing platform or view a live stream on the Department’s website or on YouTube.

Want to try hunting small game?

If hunting waterfowl isn’t your thing, maybe hunting small game is! The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is teaming up with New Mexico Outdoor Adventures to host a beginner Small Game Hunting Camp Sept. 26-28 at Quemado Lake, giving families a chance to bond and create memories that will last a lifetime!

Participants will learn about how to identify different species, as well as

hunting techniques, field dressing,

shotgun shooting and rules and regulations. The free camp will take place at the El Caso Forest Service campground, so participants will need to bring their own tent or wheeled camper in addition to a sleeping bag and sleeping pad. All meals and gear will be provided.

Registration will open at 8 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8, and will remain open until the camp is full. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Click here to register.
