Somos Un Pueblo Unido denounces the deadly federal law enforcement shooting that occurred in south Minneapolis during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation, raising urgent concerns about the safety and dignity of immigrant communities.
On January 7, 2026, an ICE agent shot and fatally killed a 37-year-old woman during a federal immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis. Federal officials claim the agent fired because the woman allegedly attempted to use her vehicle against law enforcement, but local leaders and eyewitnesses dispute that account, and video footage contradict the federal narrative. The incident occurred amid what has been described as one of the largest federal immigration enforcement operations in the Twin Cities area, involving thousands of agents.
Somos Un Pueblo Unido offers the following statement in response:
“While this incident occurred in Minnesota, the implications are deeply felt in New Mexico. Our state has experienced increased federal immigration enforcement in rural communities, near worksites, and in places families rely on for safety and care. When federal agents use aggressive tactics anywhere in the country, immigrant families, organizations, and community allies everywhere—including here in New Mexico—are forced to wonder whether their own communities could be next.
This tragic event highlights the ongoing and escalating use of federal immigration enforcement tactics in communities across the country. Too often, these operations provoke fear among immigrant families, strain trust in public safety institutions, and place non-combatants and loved ones in harm’s way.
Somos Un Pueblo Unido stands in solidarity with all families and community members affected by this incident and with local organizations and advocates in Minnesota and beyond who are demanding accountability, transparency, and immediate de-escalation of federal enforcement actions that endanger lives.
We call on federal, state, and local leaders to prioritize policies that protect human rights, ensure community safety, and uphold due process for all residents — regardless of immigration status.”
