Ukraine in Crisis

The Fellowship has received updates from our partners in Ukraine that the situation in this war-torn country is dire. Escalating attacks on Kyiv’s critical infrastructure have left large parts of the city without basic services. Nearly half of homes are without power and heat, and disruptions to the water supply have also been reported. This isn’t unique to the capital. Other cities, such as Dnipro, are experiencing total blackouts, and the water supply there has been deemed unsafe, forcing residents to purchase drinking water. Weather conditions are worsening. Emergency response teams are operating in crisis mode.

Despite the severity of the situation, there is hope – and The Fellowship and our supporters are providing it. Heating has been restored to essential institutions like hospitals, power has been restored in some areas, and some residents have been able to relocate to locations with access to power, heat, and water. Emergency repair teams are also working around the clock to fix damaged transportation infrastructure, such as bridges, to allow for increased delivery of humanitarian aid.

Hundreds of heating units were made possible with The Fellowship’s assistance and in collaboration with our partners in the region. Thanks to our generous supporters, 30 warming hubs are operating across Ukraine. Our funding also supports food distribution to families and Jewish communities as the harsh winter tightens its grip.

The crisis continues to have a profound impact on Jewish communities throughout Ukraine. Last week, an elderly Jewish man was killed when a rocket struck a residential area in Kherson, and synagogues have also been hit. In response, The Fellowship and our partners immediately established trauma centers to support survivors.

The Fellowship’s annual funding includes preparation for emergency responses such as this. Our primary focus is to provide power and food where they are needed most. During winter, this support also extends to essentials such as heating fuel and extra clothing. While dropping temperatures, increased strikes, and damaged infrastructure present serious challenges, they have never stopped The Fellowship from acting and delivering aid.
