New Mexico Big Game Draw Deadlines Are Approaching Quickly

If you’re planning to hunt big game in New Mexico next season, the clock is ticking. The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is reminding hunters that draw deadlines for several species are approaching fast, and applying early can save you time and headaches.

The deadline to apply for draw licenses for Barbary sheep, deer, elk, ibex, javelina, pronghorn, and oryx is March 18 at 5 p.m.. Hunters are encouraged to submit applications well before the deadline to avoid last-minute delays and long online wait times.

Apply Early and Avoid the Rush

The Department recommends submitting your application before March 11, 2026. Applying early not only helps avoid technical issues or long wait times, but it also automatically enters applicants into prize drawings being held throughout the application period.

These giveaways are made possible through partnerships with several outdoor organizations and companies supporting New Mexico’s hunting community.

Hunters can begin the application process by logging into their account through the Department’s licensing system here:

https://onlinesales.wildlife.state.nm.us

If you have trouble accessing your account, the Department’s Information Center can assist at 888-248-6866.

Don’t Forget Your Harvest Reports

Hunters who participated in previous seasons must also make sure their harvest reports are submitted on time.

  • March 18 (midnight): Harvest reports due for deer, elk, pronghorn, and turkey.
  • April 7 (midnight): Harvest reports due for Barbary sheep, ibex, javelina, oryx, and trapper license holders.

Failure to submit harvest reports by the deadlines can result in rejection of your next draw application. A late fee of $8 may apply if reports are submitted after the deadline.

Important Reminder for Youth Hunters

Hunters under 18 years old must complete a Hunter Education course before applying for the draw. These courses tend to fill up quickly as deadlines approach, so early registration is strongly encouraged.

You can view available in-person classes here:

The Department also offers online courses, including a Spanish-language option, for students age 9 and older.

Mentor-Youth Hunting Option

If a youth hunter cannot complete a Hunter Education course before the deadline, those aged 10–17 may still participate through the Mentor-Youth Hunter Program. By passing an online quiz and obtaining a mentor-youth number, participants may apply for select draw hunts including deer, pronghorn, and javelina.

More information about the program can be found in the official hunting regulations booklet:

Bottom line: If you’re planning to hunt New Mexico’s big game next season, don’t wait. Make sure your account works, submit your harvest reports, and apply early so you’re not racing the deadline.
